To eliminate any hidden defects (pores, cracks, incomplete fusion), a multi-level control system operates at the plant. All welds are subject to inspection using non-destructive testing (NDT) methods:
- Ultrasonic testing (UT): allows detecting internal metal and weld defects at great depth without destroying the structure itself.
- Magnetic particle testing (MT): an effective method for detecting surface and sub-surface cracks or incomplete fusion using a magnetic field and indicator powder.
- Visual and dimensional control (VT) at each assembly stage.
